The sun’s warmth and radiance can be uplifting, but it is essential to remember that prolonged sun exposure without adequate protection can lead to harmful consequences for your skin. Anabaptist HealthShare is providing this friendly health reminder as you enjoy the warm sunshine.

Understanding the Risks:

Anabaptist HealthShare believes that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and as healthcare sharing ministry members encourage one another in making good healthcare choices, it strengthens the sharing community. While spending time outdoors can be enjoyable, the sun emits ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can damage your skin cells. Long-term sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Sun Protection Strategies:

Here are some sun protection strategies that Anabaptist HealthShare encourages members to follow:

  1. Apply Sunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of skin, including your face, neck, ears, and hands. Remember to reapply every two hours or more frequently if you are sweating or swimming.
  2. Seek Shade: When the sun’s rays are at their strongest, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., seek shade whenever possible. If you need to be outside during these hours, consider using umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, or sun-protective clothing to minimize direct sun exposure.
  3. Wear Protective Clothing: Opt for clothing that provides additional protection against the sun. Long-sleeved shirts and pants cover more skin and provide more protection.
  4. Be Mindful of Reflection: Keep in mind that water, sand, snow, and other reflective surfaces can intensify the sun’s rays.
