Water activities offer a refreshing escape from the summer heat, but it is crucial to prioritize safety to prevent accidents and tragedies. Anabaptist HealthShare cares for the health and wellness of all members and is providing this health tip for your awareness.

Understanding the Risks:

Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths worldwide, especially among children and young adults. Whether it is a swimming pool, beach, lake, or even a bathtub, water environments carry inherent risks. It takes only a few moments for a water-related accident to occur, which emphasizes the need for good water safety awareness and preventive measures.

Water Safety Strategies:

Here are some water safety strategies that Anabaptist HealthShare encourages members to follow:

  1. Learn to Swim: Learning to swim not only enhances enjoyment of water activities, but also provides crucial water safety skills that can save lives.
  2. Supervision: Never leave children unattended near water, even for a moment. Designate a responsible adult as the designated “water watcher” during gatherings or outings near water. Constant supervision is vital to prevent accidents.
  3. Secure Pool Areas: If you have a swimming pool at home, a fence with self-locking, child-proof gates can go a long way to restricting access. Installing pool alarms and covers also adds an extra layer of protection.
  4. Wear Life Jackets: Whenever participating in water activities like boating or kayaking, ensure everyone has a fitted life jacket.
  5. Learn CPR: Familiarize yourself with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques. CPR can be a life-saving measure in water-related emergencies, providing vital support until professional help arrives.
